TriMet has backed away from a plan to buy an 1894 Queen Anne known as the Figo House, near the new terminus of the MAX line and transit mall by Portland State University.

The agency had considered buying the property, perhaps through condemnation, to help PSU build a dormitory on the block bounded by Southwest Fifth and Sixth avenues and Southwest College and Jackson streets.

But property owner Randal Acker didn't want to sell and fought plans to remove the house from the block. "I'm very pleased," Acker said Friday. "It's been a long battle. It's nice to walk away with what I consider a victory."
