Tri-Met's MAX light-rail line and several bus
lines also go through the
area and their riders, too, should notice
the change, said Norm Monroe,
staff assistant for County Commission Chairwoman
Gladys McCoy.

Assaults occur, but unruly riders are more
frequent
The crush of high
school students poured onto the northbound bus.
Their yelling dissipated
among the city's noises as they waited at Tri-Met's Coliseum transit center.
But it seemed to
intensify when they boarded a bus to Northeast
15th Avenue. Shrill cries repeatedly came from the back of the bus where
the
students clambered over one another. Obscenities
flew. Other passengers grimaced. Conversation was difficult.
``It's always like
this,'' one passenger said, shaking her head. ``So relax, but be alert.''
Such scenes are
frequently replayed on specific Tri-Met buses and MAX trains when Portland
schools let out.

``Every
driver has stories about passengers who are unpredictable and go from being
simply discourteous to assaultive,'' Wyss said.
